Releasing Speckled Trout
Most inshore anglers often wonder whether speckled trout survive after being released. This concern was raised when Louisiana decreased the speckled trout creel limit from twenty-five to fifteen following extensive population studies and discussions among anglers. Some argued that speckled trout have a high mortality rate after being caught, casting doubt on the effectiveness of releasing them. However, there is no evidence to support this claim. Personally, I have tagged and released over 100 speckled trout without observing significant mortality.
What Happens When You Release Speckled Trout
As a passionate angler who deeply respects speckled trout, I am dedicated to promoting ethical and sustainable fishing practices. My goal is to dispel the misconception that catch and release harms speckled trout by sharing valuable resources that support its ethical practice. Without Speckled Trout our Inshore business would suffer so, I have a vested interest to get this right.
The short answer to the question of whether speckled trout survive after being released, the answer is mostly “yes,” with occasional instances of “no.” In my experience, careful handling significantly increases their chances of survival. Keep in mind they do have soft lips. Additionally, our guides have kept numerous speckled trout in a livewell for observation and, under suitable conditions, they thrived, especially in water temperatures ranging from the 60s to 70s.
Furthermore, a 10-year study by Dr. Greg Stunz at the Harte Research Institute in Corpus Christi, Texas, revealed that over 90% of caught and released speckled trout survived. Similarly, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science found that approximately 3-4% of speckled trout died after being caught and released, a significantly lower rate compared to mortality caused by fishing for consumption. These studies underscore the resilience of speckled trout and strongly support the ethical practice of catch and release. I urge you to explore these valuable resources further to comprehensively understand this topic.
How to Properly Release Speckled Trout
These methods involve safely returning the fish to the water after catching them, ensuring their well-being and the sustainability of the population. To achieve this, it’s crucial to employ the right tackle and techniques. Begin by selecting a hook that matches the size of the fish you’re aiming for. Once you’ve hooked a fish, keep it in the water as much as possible to minimize stress and protect its gills. When it’s time to release the fish, delicately remove the hook using pliers or a dehooking tool. Hold the fish upright in the water and gently sway it back and forth to aid in oxygenating its gills. Once the fish has regained its strength and is swimming actively, release it back into the water. By embracing catch-and-release techniques, we can each contribute to the preservation of speckled trout populations and ensure the continued health of this remarkable fishery for generations to come!
