Summer Surf Fishing in the Northern Gulf of America
Ah, summer in the northern Gulf! While it might mean more beachgoers and some hot days, with some planning, it’s easy to enjoy all this season offers. The secret? Get out early to beat the heat! Even though we’re saying farewell to some of our spring fish friends, there’s still a lot of exciting fishing waiting for you over the summer!
June
June is a fantastic time to hit the water as the temperatures warm up to the low 80s, making it just right for Spanish Mackerel fishing! You’ll also start to see Bonito swimming about. There might still be a few Cobia hanging around, but don’t get your hopes too high for them. Pompano, Black Drum, and Redfish are still out there, though you might notice fewer catches than spring. If it’s Pompano, you’re to get out there super early before the water temp reaches its peak for the day. These warmer temps will drive the Pompano into deeper waters reasonably quickly! You can easily catch your bait with Ladyfish and Hardtails (Blue Runners) hanging out nearby. They’re fantastic for your fishing adventures!
July
As we roll into July, the fishing gets even more exciting! More extraordinary water fish start to fade away, but warm-water species come alive as the temperatures hit the mid-80s. Spanish Mackerel are at their peak, and Bonito will also make a bigger splash. Try casting spoons or lures in the surf for some great catches! Light tackle while reading about waist deep can be very productive for catching Spanish Mackerel and Bonita. Redfish are still in abundance, and you might even land a Pompano. And yes, the sharks are still out there and will be moving closer to shore towards summer’s end, thus making them a real possibility for surf fishermen to keep.
August
Now, let’s chat about August—it’s the hottest month! With water temperatures soaring into the upper 80s, fishing remains stellar for warm-water species like Spanish Mackerel and Bonito. Targeting Redfish, Black Drum, and Pompano can be a bit trickier in the heat, but don’t sweat it; they’re still out there for those willing! Shark fishing from the beach can be productive in late summer, especially at night. In Panama City Beach, FL, the Blacktip and Atlantic Sharpnoes are most excellent in numbers. The best bait for a Blacktip shark is typically chunks of oily fish like Bonito, stingray, or mullet, as they release a strong scent that attracts the shark from a distance; fresh-killed ladyfish is also considered a top choice, often used in conjunction with frozen squid. So gear up and prepare for some enjoyable summer days on the water!
