Spring 2025 Surf Fishing Forecast

Spring 2025 Surf Fishing Forecast

As spring arrives, anglers can expect an exciting fishing forecast, with various species becoming active as the water temperatures rise. The transition from winter to spring brings warmer weather and stirs up a flurry of fishing activity along the coast. The pompano bite is beginning to pick up. These tasty fish are typically found in shallow waters along the beaches, especially when the water temperature reaches the sweet spot in the 60s. Anglers should use simple pompano rigs equipped with sand flea or shrimp-flavored Fishbites and fresh dead shrimp to entice these fish. Pompano tends to congregate in large schools, making this a prime time for targeted fishing. However, as the water continues to warm toward summer, expect them to move into deeper waters.

Alongside Pompano, black drums have been showing strongly in the surf. These “big uglies” are best sought after with standard bottom fishing techniques. Live or fresh dead bait works wonders, and the thrill of reeling in these strong fighters will surely excite any angler. Their presence provides an excellent opportunity for a satisfying catch and delicious meal. While the whiting bite has been less consistent, as the temperatures stabilize, fortunes may change. Whiting often frequents the surf and is popular among anglers for their tasty flesh. Finding them requires a bit of finesse; using a lighter tackle, such as 8-10 lb test monofilament or fluorocarbon paired with small 1/0 circle hooks, can increase your chances of success. Small pieces of fresh dead shrimp or tiny sand fleas are ideal baits to attract these fish. Speckled trout and flounder are becoming more active in deeper waters as the water warms.

Targeting speckled trout can be exciting, especially when active feeding times align with low-light conditions during dawn and dusk. In this scenario, topwater lures or soft plastics can produce great results. Drifting live bait such as mullet or minnow can be highly effective for flounder, especially around structures or sandy bottoms. As spring progresses, expect more species to move inshore, creating a diverse fishing experience.

Always check local regulations and adhere to size and bag limits to ensure a sustainable fishery.
