“Fishing is much more than fish. It is the great occasion when we may return to the fine simplicity of our forefathers.” – Herbert Hoover
May Fishing Forcast: Overview
Simply put, I love fishing in May. For starters, May is the only month between spring break and summer vacation. This allows us “local anglers” to get out and enjoy our waterways, a favorable fishing forecast and not have to fight the crowd. Furthermore, the winds are relatively calm allowing for flat seas. As if this were not enough their is 5 days per month (on average) of rain and highs in the 80’s with lows in the 60’s. I’m not kidding when I say ‘May can be almost perfect”.
May Fishing Forcast: Nearshore / Offshore
When we think of great Offshore conditions we think of May. For the most part, the spring storms that tend to pop up along the coast have moved on. In addition, water and air temp can rise as much as 10 degrees over the course of the last month. Thus causing the pelagic waters come to life. Weed lines serve as floating offshore habitat for may sportfish such as Mahi – Mahi & Wahoo. The 20 to the 80-mile range is where one could expect to find great trolling and sight fishing action offshore. Sportsmen must prepare for a 10 to 18 hour day in order to take advantage of this action. For those looking to go after biggest and worst beast, the Gulf of Mexico has to offer marlin & swordfish tend to come to a little closer to shore this time of year.
May Fishing Forcast: Inshore Action
The red fishing forecast is constantly good in many of the bays & lagoons from Panama City Beach, FL to Orange Beach, AL. While we do expect the redfish to remain strong the speckled trout are starting to grow in numbers. As the summer progressed they will be found along some of the same structure along the coast that the Sheepshead hung around during the winter months. Furthermore, while the sheepshead has moved on the flounder are beginning to enjoy the warmer waters. May often experiences mild wind and little rain so conditions for saltwater bow fishing are expected to be excellent throughout the month. The beaches bring a unique opportunity to have a killer surf fishing experience as well. Simply put, the pompano action is on fire.
